Introduction

Dr. Gustavo Avila-Ortiz is a board-certified periodontist and internationally recognized leader in periodontics and implant dentistry, distinguished for his contributions to education, research, and clinical innovation. 

He is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, where he currently serves as Director of the Graduate Periodontics Program. In addition, Dr. Avila-Ortiz is the Editor-in-Chief of The International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry (IJPRD), one of the most prestigious journals in the specialty.

Dr. Avila-Ortiz received his DDS and PhD from the University of Granada, Spain, followed by a Master of Science degree and a Certificate in Periodontics from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. He has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications and book chapters, contributing significantly to the advancement of evidence-based periodontal and implant therapy.

He is the co-author of the critically acclaimed textbook “TISSUES: Critical Issues in Periodontics and Implant-Related Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery,” which has been translated into multiple languages and is widely regarded as a definitive reference in soft-tissue management. In recognition of his scientific impact, Dr. Avila-Ortiz was awarded the American Academy of Periodontology Distinguished Scientist Award in 2022.
